What Is Dental Insurance and How Does It Work?
Dental insurance may seem complex, but it can significantly assist in making dental care more affordable for patients. Many individuals receive insurance through their employers, who often contribute towards the cost, further enhancing affordability.
In essence, patients with dental insurance pay a monthly premium to their insurance provider to remain enrolled, and in return, they receive complimentary or discounted dental services based on their specific insurance plan. Typically, preventive care, including two teeth cleanings, exams, and x-rays per year, is covered at 100%. Subsequently, basic care and major procedures are covered at varying percentages, with patients assuming a greater portion of the cost for major treatments.
In-Network vs. Out-of-Network
Numerous patients often find themselves uncertain about whether a dental facility falls within their dental insurance provider's network or is considered out-of-network, along with the implications of this distinction. While "out-of-network" might imply that the practice doesn't accept your insurance, it's not always true and varies depending on the specifics of your insurance plan.
PPO Plans
PPO plans are much more flexible & the distinction between in-network & out-of-network is much less limiting. When a dental practice is in-network with a PPO insurance provider, it just means they have a deal where the practice can charge the patient a smaller portion of the total cost for treatment services. However, even out-of-network costs are often quite reasonable.
