X-rays, also known as radiographs, have long been integral to preventive dental care. These electromagnetic radiation waves initially referred to as X-rays when they were first discovered, are invisible to the human eye.
By passing through the soft tissues of the face and mouth (such as lips and cheeks) but being absorbed by the hard structures of teeth and bone, X-rays enable dentists to detect potential oral health issues not easily visible from the outside. Dental X-rays are primarily employed to identify cavities, assess tooth roots, evaluate the health of the bone surrounding the tooth, detect possible periodontal (gum) disease, analyze tooth and jaw positioning, and monitor development in younger patients.
Bite-wing X-rays are the most common type of dental X-rays. They are called bite-wing X-rays due to the wing shape of the films used in the past. During the procedure, you sit in the dental chair while a dental team member positions a sensor in your mouth. You'll be asked to bite down as they direct a tube-shaped device toward your face. This device emits the X-rays through your tissues and onto the sensor in your mouth. There is no light or heat emitted from the X-ray emitter, and the process is typically painless.
One significant advantage of modern digital X-rays over the traditional film type is the lack of waiting time between capturing the X-rays and examining them. The X-ray images are instantaneously transmitted to a monitor in the treatment room, allowing us to assess the health of your teeth and identify potential issues right away. The dentist can conveniently show you potential areas of concern, providing you with a clear understanding of your oral health condition. Moreover, the digital files can be easily shared with any other dental professionals who might be involved in your future care, ensuring seamless collaboration for your dental well-being.
