Sealants are remarkably effective in guarding against tooth decay on the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars. These natural pits and grooves on the teeth can easily trap food particles and bacteria, which are hard to remove with regular brushing.
Although teeth are protected by enamel, the deep pits and grooves can harbor bacteria, leading to cavities that may necessitate costly and uncomfortable restorative treatments.
While anyone can benefit from sealants, they are especially recommended for children when their adult teeth begin to emerge, offering them added protection from an early age and keeping their teeth cavity-free throughout their school years. This not only saves families from expensive dental work but also allows children to focus on their studies without being bothered by toothaches or dental visits.
What are sealants?
Sealants are a simple and painless procedure involving the application of a clear or tooth-colored acrylic "coating" to the tooth's surface. This effectively seals the deep grooves where decay is most likely to occur. Costing less than half of conventional fillings and without the need for anesthesia or drilling, sealants are a highly valuable preventive measure we offer.
Sealants can last for several years, and research has shown that the likelihood of developing a cavity on a sealed tooth is reduced by half in the first five years after the procedure. However, we do regularly check the sealant's condition during cleaning appointments. If any damage or loss occurs, we may recommend a new sealant, always discussing the most appropriate course of action with you.
Procedure Overview
Placing a sealant is a quick and painless process. Typically applied to molars, dentists first thoroughly clean the tooth's biting surface, ensuring the grooves are clear. The tooth's surface may be roughened to enhance the sealant's adhesion. After a quick rinse and ensuring the tooth is dry, your dentist will apply the sealant. The last step is drying it, and it's all done!
In some cases of high risk, we may suggest applying a sealant to a child's primary tooth. While these teeth are temporary, they play a crucial role in guiding adult teeth into proper positions. Excessive tooth decay leading to early loss or extraction of primary teeth can cause misalignment as other teeth may shift to fill the gaps. This can create confusion for adult teeth trying to grow in, as there might not be a clear path for them. Sealants on at-risk primary teeth aim to support long-term dental health, ensuring a smooth transition to healthy adult teeth.
Combined with regular cleanings, diligent at-home hygiene routines, and consistent fluoride usage, sealants are an essential tool in preserving teeth health and keeping cavities at bay.
