Despite our best efforts, tooth loss can occur. Dentists have honed their skills in replacing lost teeth, offering various solutions tailored to individual needs.
Teeth Replacing a missing tooth is not merely for aesthetic purposes. After tooth loss, neighboring teeth may shift, affecting your ability to bite, chew, and speak. Moreover, the shifting of bones can even alter your facial structure in the long run.
Dental bridges are specifically designed to replace missing teeth and stabilize adjacent teeth. Several types of bridges exist, but in most cases, they involve a false tooth (pontic) supported by one or more neighboring teeth. Unlike dental implants rooted directly in the jaw, a bridge relies on attachment to nearby teeth.
The most common type consists of a pontic tooth supported by two dental crowns that cover the adjacent teeth. The crowns are placed after reshaping the teeth and secured with bonding resin.
Similar to a traditional bridge, but the pontic only attaches to one abutment, often used for back teeth.
Uses metal or porcelain bands bonded to nearby teeth without filing them down. While less invasive, they may not be suitable for molars due to chewing strain.
Getting a dental bridge requires multiple appointments. Any necessary treatment on the supporting teeth, like fillings or root canals, must be done first. Next, the enamel is removed from the supporting teeth to accommodate the abutment crowns. A mold is made and sent to a lab for crafting a personalized bridge, which takes a few weeks. A temporary bridge is provided while waiting for the custom restoration. At the final appointment, the permanent bridge is placed, and adjustments are made as needed.
Proper care ensures the longevity of your dental bridge. Regular brushing, flossing, cleaning under the pontic, and routine dental checkups and cleanings are essential. With adequate care, a dental bridge can last well over a decade.
